Mack Brown on Leadership

University of Texas football coach Mack Brown had this to say on ESPN radio this week:

Don’t say “I taught him.” If you had, then he’d be responding.

The difference between teaching and talking is the response of the hearer. The responsibility always lands on the shoulders of the teacher. I understand the Biblical role of the Holy Spirit in the convicting of God’s people, but I think this same concept can be applied in the church.

I wonder how many pastors have thought and said, “I taught our congregation. They just aren’t responding to my leadership.”

If they’re not responding, could it be that you were just talking, and failed to lead them to your desired response?
